When people look into their own family history, the biggest question most people have is: “Where do I start?”. This can be enough to put you off looking all together.
But, our answer is simple: start with what you know.
Most people know a little about their origins: where their paternal great grandfather came from, say, and what he did for a living. However, much of the information most of us have about those who came before has been passed down from one generation to the next by word of mouth, often with very little to verify any of it. All too often, much of the story has been changed or lost along the way.
So while these unverified, often fantastical family tales might have made a great anecdote and been enough for previous generations, that needn’t be the case for subsequent ones. Now you can prove or disprove those stories - one way or another - and have the truth, once and for all.
Verifying family tales, however, is just one of the many reasons people give for beginning to research their family history. They might begin with a simple question: who was my paternal great great grandfather? Where was he born? The problem with researching your family history, however, is, once you answer one question, it invariably raises a whole load more. Where in the country? Who were his family? Did he have siblings? Why and how did he end up here…?
That’s the beauty of hiring a researcher. We can swiftly answer many of the questions you and your family may have asked for generations - plus a whole load more you may never have even considered. Did you know he had ten siblings, say? Or that his father was a sugar boiler from a little village just north of Berlin?
